Some examples of these are “Do not let the flag touch the ground. Do not fly flag upside down unless there is an emergency. Do not carry the flag flat, or carry things in it. Do not use the flag as clothing. Do not store the flag where it can get dirty. Do not use it as a cover” (Flag Etiquette). These special rules showed respect by keeping it clean, and pristine because if it is dirty, or ripped it's shows that people really don't care for the flag, or the history of the United States. The Flag Code in theory was made to protect the Flag. Since the Flag Code was made it did for the most part, but people still damage the flag in certain ways. An example of this is during Fourth of July when people buy the cheap small flags, and either throw them away, or drop them to the ground.
