Although I am proud of the name Connor McClaine Flagerman today, the name Flagerman was not always a name to be proud of. During the mid-1800’s the Irish potato famine led to a lot of Irish immigrating to the U.S. Unfortunately, my ancestor with the original last name O’fhegrman would not have been allowed into the U.S. because he was a white-collar criminal. Instead he was sent to a penal colony which was a prison in Australia. As the story goes he tied up the constables and escaped on a merchant boat headed to San Francisco. In order to get into the U.S., he changed his last name to Flagerman and claimed he was from Germany. So, part of my name stems from a criminal who escaped prison and forged documents to get into the United states. The name they chose for me was Connor. They said it took a long time to choose names for several reasons. First, they wanted it to be an Irish name. Second, they wanted it to sound good all together. Lastly, my mom didn’t want my name that everyone can make fun of. At one point my dad suggested the name Cooper but my mom thought it sounded like a dog’s name.
