Fourthly, Stingray: the octopus also brings its arms together but this time instead of having all of its arms compacted together they leave one arm dragging out as well they chose to change colors to a darker color to deceive the predator surrounding them. Once again the mimic octopus chooses to disguise as a stingray to fool predators.
Fifthly, The mimic octopus can accommodate to copying an eel. The way the octopus does it equally distribute their tentacles in a way where they look elongated like an eel. They also tend …show more content…
Researchers wanted to find out whether the act of mimicry including the flatfish-swimming was an adaptation which means it went through changes over a period of time to become better suited to live in the environment, or was it an exaptation. Exaptation is a trait which is already present in a species and was later coopted and elaborated in this lineage to assume a new adaptive function. After studies that consisted of making up the octopus phylogeny using mitochondrial DNA it was later on concluded that act of mimicry was a genuine adaptation, evolved over a period of time. They made this conclusion because scientists haven't seen these traits in the outer different groups of octopus. The lack of ink and toxin in their own kind. led to the reason that they had to become masters of disguise for the purpose of survival. This is an example of natural selection in which they evolved over time with different characteristics rather than have the threat of being endangered or
