In the book “Flat Out Celeste,” Celeste isolates herself from all the other students at her school. She has little interest in making friends because she assumes that doing so would be “setting herself up for failure” (28). In other words, she’s scared that making friends would only hurt her in the end because they might be disloyal or betray her. However, because she hasn’t reached out to anyone since she suspects they will only affect her in a bad way, she doesn’t know how they might change her life for the better.
