Florence Kelley's syntax and use of diction helped pull the reader into the issue in her heart. Kelley's speaks on the harsh reality of child labor. She speaks on the harsh reality of child labor. She speaks on what is really happening in our society, the fact that little girls will working all day and night for us to have what we need/want. Kelley tells us what goes on "while we sleep." One way that she does that is by appealing to our sense of logic. Kelley, in the beginning, mentions that "two million children" are "earning their bread."
