Fly Away Home and “The 1st”

Have you ever wondered how it would feel to be homeless? In this book and poem, there are two families that have to experience the pain of being homeless and having no money. They’re also trying to save money to buy a house so they could live in it.

In the Book Fly Away Home, Andrew and his dad don’t want to get caught living in the airport, and in the poem “The 1st”, one family lives on the street and all they have is a playground and a few junk with them. Andrew and his dad have some savings with them because Andrews father is a janitor at an office, on page 22 Andrew goes around the airport trying to find lost luggage to sell to people, so they would get breakfast almost every day, but in the poem, it doesn’t

They try not to get caught living in the airport because they’d get kicked out. My prediction of what happened in the poem is that the mother had lost her job and they never had enough money to pay the rent for the house so they had lost everything, and they now live on the streets. When you read the poem, it sounds like the kids had fun no matter what because they had a playground near them and they’d jump near the curbs, and it specifically says, “hollering. Andrew and his father were dreaming about getting enough money to buy an apartment or house and getting a new job. There was also another family in the story Fly Away Home who were best friends with Andrew and his father, and they said if they but an apartment or house they’ll let the family live with them. In the poem, it said the story like the narrator who’s reading was the homeless one because it said “what I remember.” From the sound of it, it sounded like the families had a house and then lost it because either a family member or they got fired from their job and had no money to pay for the
