In FMS 508: Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Media, the assignment required an analysis of sexuality, sexual politics, articulations of sexual orientation, and/or ideologies related to sexuality in media by focusing on a specific scene or two from a film or television show. I chose the movie “First Wives’ Club” as it opens the discussion of accepting the female sexuality of middle-aged women as they navigate relationships with aspirations of acceptance, vulnerability, freedom, and independence. The analysis was designed for a scholarly audience, including my professor and students across the course, as I provided summary-level observation instead of presenting a detailed understanding of how media presents the sexual identities of specific groups.
