About 40 percent of the United States food supply goes uneaten. Preventing food waste saves money and resources. Resources used to produce uneaten foods are: 30 percent of fertilizer, 31 percent of cropland, 25 percent of total freshwater use and 2 percent of total energy use. Wastage happens at all steps of production, handling, storage, processing, distribution, and consumption. Food waste affects the environment because it harms climate, waste and land. Food waste can be prevented by composting wasted food instead of putting them in landfills. It is very important to compost foods because food scrap items such as fruits, vegetables, and general refrigerator spoilage are an everyday occurrence in some homes. Composting is a controlled process of decomposition of organic material. One way to compost wasted foods is to use a regular food compost. A regular compost is where you put your fruit and vegetable scraps, plus food wastes such as coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggs shells, can be composted. To keep animals and odors out of your pile, do not add meat, bones, fatty food wastes (such as cheese, grease and oils), dog and cat litter, and diseased plants. …show more content…
I think that there should be a way to compost meat without the odor. I this because in order to reduce the amount of wasted foods put in landfill, you need to create a compost that will help take out a majority of the food waste percentage. Without a compost that will protect the meat from bugs and animals, the majority of the food waste in landfills, would have to be meat and all of the excess parts of the meat. This will help speed up the composting
