Question 1: What information is on food labels and why is the information important?
1. Food label is broken down into different sections which provides different, but important information.
a. Serving Size generally is the amount of food/drink being serve, which needs to be controlled and considered mainly for nutrition, weight control, and overall well-being.
b. Calories are important for food labels for consumers to have knowledge regarding how the specific food will affect their own main health concerns.
c. Daily Values are important because they guide the consumer to nutrients in one serving of what is being consumed. “Daily Values are based on a 2,000-calorie diet.”
d. Nutrients can improve the situation of Americans not getting enough

Fresh- foods are raw and contain zero preservatives.
l. Health Claims- differentiate relationships between food, components, or dietary ingredients leading to risk disease in the future.
m. Qualified Heath Claims- Are supported by scientific research, but do not stand by the “significant scientific agreement” required for a health claim.
3. Dietary Supplement labels provide similar information but vary slightly.
a. Structure/Function claims provide descriptions to roles of nutrients and/or dietary ingredient intended to affect normal function of human body growth.

Summary and Apply to Self: Understanding the nutrients on food labels will help me improve my health intake and have a better outlook on what I will put into my body whenever I grab something to drink or a bite to eat. Knowing how to read a food label properly will also let me know if something on a label is too much of what I need, then I should probably look for another type of food to prevent any problems with my body in the future.
