The ending was one of my favorite parts of The Secret Life of Bees. I was honestly shocked that Lily ended up forgiving T. Ray after all he did to her mentally and physically. Forgiveness, self-confidence, understanding, and knowledge are all ideas that the book ties up loose ends with. This type of ending was exactly what this book needed, if Sue Monk Kidd had ended it differently then the book would have been open-ended. In having Lily forgive T.Ray Kidd added closure to the book. Through this forgiveness, Lily learns to believe in herself and her convictions. Not only has Lily forgiven T. Ray she has forgiven herself. She learned through her relationship with the Calendar sisters one mistake made years previously does not define her.
