What issues could arise if a crime scene technician, detective or investigator did not fulfill his or her obligation to handle, collect and package crime scene evidence in a way that prevents changing or contaminating these items? See if you can locate a case in which the evidence was NOT collected and/or packaged correctly, discuss the mistakes that were made and what you would do differently.
If an investigator does not fulfill their obligation to handling the evidence with care by following the right procedures so many things could go wrong. If not handled right, it could lead to mistaking the suspect for someone else, accusing someone else to be convicted for the crime, investigators will not be able to reconstruct the crime because of the contamination, or the worse thing possible that the evidence will not be able to hold up in court making it into an unsolved “cold” case.
The case I chose was a case is Germany. It had seemed that a mortuary had contaminated evidence by using the same utensils on two totally different victims causing suspension to brew. I would have definitely included the scissors I used into the evidence bag because I might have messed something on the victim that investigators could have found and used a different pair for the next victim.
