Introduction
The community that will be analyzed throughout this assignment is a community on the west-end of Ottawa by the name of Foster Farms. Foster Farms is also popularly named Ramsey within the city of Ottawa, and it cannot be ignored that this neighbourhood has a largely negative media perception. Foster Farms is not the most affluent community in the city in Ottawa (Daigle, 2014). The community resources available in Foster Farms assists community members to normalize their struggles, socialize with others, and overcome their difficulties, which is an incredibly important aspect of community social work (Owusu, 2018). As discussed in lectures, community strength and participation can lead to the development of strengths for individuals, as well as the fact that the validation of individual experiences and difficulties ultimately leads to widespread empowerment for individuals and the community as a whole. In this analysis, I will outline how three community resources in particular that lead to community strength, I will also include personal anecdotes that prove that the Foster Farms that is portrayed in the media, is not the Foster Farms that community members experience. Through personal discussions with community members I now understand that the real Foster Farms emanates strength and communal bonds, not the violence and criminal activity that is portrayed in the news (Daigle, 2014). The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa has numerous clubhouses and recreational programs throughout the city. However, the presence of this organization in this community cannot be ignored. I believe that a child’s path to reach success should not be littered with social injustices such as poverty, discrimination, food insecurity, among other issues that are present in this community. The particular social injustices present in this community will not be examined further, due to the fact that the strengths and resources for children, and other community members, within the community greatly outweighs the difficulties and injustices. Organizations like the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa are incredibly important in ensuring that children have a clear path to success, and they are provided with the necessary resources and assistance to succeed. As this organization paves the way for the next generation to succeed without structural inequalities holding them back. The Boys and Girls Club in Foster Farm provides free recreational activities to youth, and provides youth with the “safe and supportive place to go after school” (Keeping kids safe and out of trouble, 2016).
