The Goya: A Lifetime of Graphic Invention, exhibition was very insightful. It detailed the artwork of Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes throughout his lifetime and how he depicted the events of his life through his artwork. It was a very interesting see the transition of his artwork over the course of time. His work contained various themes such as witchcraft, portraits, war, and a few others. This exhibit illuminates a not so well known aspect of Goya’s artistic legacy by showing the artist’s technical experimentation in the art of printmaking, which helped to move from the ways of the Old Masters into the modern era of art. It did so by showing images of dream like subjects, ranging from playful to the scary, some may even say monstrous pictures. An example of one of the more famous artwork of this series is known as Modo de volar, or One Way to Fly. It depicts a man flying around with what looks to be bat wings on his back and 4 others flying around in the back ground. It just gives an example his imagination of what could be possible. This showed a glimpse of Goya’s vast imagination in a time when there was political oppression and when the Roman Catholic Church was combating heresy.
Secondly, Goya’s technical experimentations with print making is what pushed the old master traditions into what the modern day art is today. An example of the sort of technical experimentations he has done is with his painting, Third of May, 1808, which he used stark lights and darks to enhance the emotion of the picture of a man about to be shot, with bodies lying around him, and other Spaniards herded together that will be shot afterwards. His technical experimentations had a great influence on other more commonly well-known artist later on, such as Manet and Picasso influencing the modern day
