Roosevelt was observed with skepticism by fellow democrats because of his aristocratic bearing and tendency to look down on others. He was also unfamiliar with the working class voters and was a former Republican. The political climate in 1910 demanded a reformer, and Roosevelt was able to gain favor with his campaign.
