It was 1879 when Frederic departed the art school at Yale. He was only able to be with his father for one year. In 1880 Remington’s father passed away. He was forty-six years old. Remington’s uncle was able to help support Frederic by providing him with the opportunity to work as a clerk. Also as a reporter for the same newspaper where his uncle was employed. At the age of nineteen Remington made a trip to Montana. This was his first time heading out west. His intentions were to purchase a cattle or mining operation, but the funds he had accumulated were insufficient. The adventure wasn’t a total loss. While out west Remington would sketch an illustration that would be his first published. In 1882 Harper’s Weekly re-drew the sketch and published it. Remington decided he wanted to become a sheep rancher, though he knew little of the occupation. He travels to Peabody, Kansas to purchase his ranch.
