Frederick Banting was born on November 14, 1891 in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. He had four older brothers. He went to high school in Alliston, and then University of Toronto. At first, he studied divinity but he changed the course to medicine. In 1916 he took his Bachelor of Medicine degree and joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps. He served during First World War in France. In 1919 Banting received the Military Cross for heroism under fire. As he returned from the war in 1919, he did part time teaching and practiced medicine in London, Ontario. In 1821 he claimed his Doctor of Medicine degree with gold medal.
