“Free” In antebellum America During the Antebellum epoch, blacks had high hopes in becoming completely free from slavery, yet America had other plans that did not fall in their favor. The Antebellum error in American history is to be the period before the Civil War and also after the War of 1812. During this era was the rise of abolitionist against the supporters of slavery. Depending on where the free blacks reside, whether it was the North or the South, determined their ability to express themselves socially and economically. Free Southern blacks still lived under the eye of slavery in terms of being able to travel or assemble as freely as those that lived in the North.
