Freedom Summer consisted of many amazing events that changed history and will be acknowledged forever. But none of these events could have happened without the amazing volunteers that risked so much to do what was necessary to make the change. Most of the volunteers were college students, leaving their homes and families for a summer, hoping they could make a real difference. Some of these people were supported, but most were not, as their parents and other family members were fully aware of the dangers that could emerge in Mississippi. The main goal of Freedom Summer was to register African American voters in Mississippi, and racist residents of the state were more than ready to do all they could to prevent this step forward. This motivation was supported by aggression and violence, tools that were used by both the Ku Klux Klan and unmasked rednecks. Mississippi’s unspoken promise to do all it would do to prevent CORE from achieving their goal floated heavy in the air, but the determination of the volunteers dispersed it. The locals there knew what was coming to their town and didn’t want anything to change in their society, so they believed that they had to take a stand to do all they could to stop the Freedom Summer volunteers. On the daily, the workers were harassed, shot at by fast driving cars and suffered Molotov cocktails being thrown at their hosts’ homes. Government organizations and the Ku Klux Klan were very active in showing their lack of support for the movement and made an increase in voting for African Americans very difficult and
