This area is called “Tips on How to Nip it all in the Bud.” This is where they give the reader tips on how not to gain weight. When reading this, the authors use pathos to try to connect with the readers to help them not gain weight in college. Pathos is when the writer relies on emotions to connect with the audience. For example, “Value yourself enough to care about your health and your own well-being. Make the majority of food choices because they are good for you, will make you feel good, and will make you stronger and healthier. You deserve it.”(Janeway, Mistry), Here the audience can see that the authors are portraying emotions that they really do care about each and every reader. When the authors say “you deserve it” they aren’t just telling the reader what to do and what not to do, they are saying that you are important to them so you should value yourself enough to stay healthy. Another example of pathos is when Janeway and Mistry say, “Don’t give in to cheap food offers. Every college campus is littered with offers for $5 large pizzas, cheap sandwiches, and a host of other fast, processed foods that can be delivered to your door. Although the deals are great, don’t give into temptation. If you must eat junk food, choose wisely and try for the most nutritious thing you can find. (Janeway, Mistry). In this quote, the authors are connecting with the reader by telling them they’ve been in their spot. They’ve gone to college and they know what its like to not have enough money to by healthy food. They connect with the readers emotions to say that they’ve been in their shoes before and there’s a way to stay healthy, even if you’re a poor college student. Finally we see pathos when Janeway and Mistry say, “Don’t do it because mom tells you to do it. Do it because you choose to do it for your own good health and well-being.”
