Freud and Jung both make implications about the “beast within” mankind. Freud speaks of the tragedy, Oedipus Rex, written by Sophocles. In Oedipus Rex, a young man, destined to be king, kills his father and has relations with his mother; unknowingly of course. Freud argues that this animalistic urge, to mate with one’s own mother, is derived from the connection a fetus has with its mother in the womb. He argues that in everyone, there is a desire, that is suppressed, to mate with their parent; a beastly, compelling, desire. He also argues that humankind has a propensity to put off situations that may cause risk or pain; such as Hamlet putting off his revenge for the killing of his father.
