In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare characterizes Friar Lawrence as wise, trustworthy, caring, but also shows he may have other intentions.

Friar Lawrence is one of the kindest people in the story, but when Friar Lawrence is not doing his job, he is usually watering his plants. This shows that he likes to be alone. Usually when someone likes to be in solitude it means they are hiding something, other times it just means that they are introverted. And on Act 2. Sc. 3, line 5 Shakespere says, “The gray-eyed morn smiles on the frowning night, Check’ring the eastern clouds with streaks of light, and freckled darkness like drunkard reels”. Here it shows Friar Lawrence alone while talking to himself. And on Act 2. Sc. 3, line 15, Shakespeare states, “I must upfill this osier cage of ours with baleful weeds and precious-juiced flowers. Friar Lawrence is known for his reputation and reliability, this allows Romeo and Juliet to trust him and allow him to marry them. And his good reputation is shown in Act 2. Sc. 3, line 65 when Shakespere writes, “Then plainly know my dear love is set on the fair daughter of rich Capulet. As mine is on hers, so hers is set on mine”. This shows Friar Lawrence's good reputation because otherwise Romeo would not have told Friar Lawrence otherwise.
