The Sign of the Beaver “To be mature means to face, and not evade, every fresh crisis that comes.” -Fritz Kunkel. In the Sign of the Beaver, Matt’s father had to decide whether Matt was mature enough to stay alone while he went to get his mother. Everyone agrees that Matt was left alone, but some believe Matt should not have stayed alone while others agree he should be left alone. Matt’s father should have left him alone for three main reasons, Matt knew how to survive, Matt’s family needed to come, and Matt’s father trusted him. The first reason Matt’s father should have left him alone is because Matt knew how to survive. Matt had been taught how to hunt deer and fish in a nearby pond for food. He built the entire cabin with his father.
