From James J. Braddock's Contribution To The Great Depression

In the great depression people were left poor and some even left homeless. When the stock market crashed people were left in a panic, scared they were going to lose everything. Some families even sent their kids away to family members in other places so they could try and save for food. James J. Braddock experienced these hard times, he fought because he wanted to keep his family put together and not suffer. His family was his inspiration as well as he was everyone in the communities inspiration. Braddock served as an inspiration to the depression era because he never quit, he did it for a cause, and because he showed great resilience in hard times. The first way Braddock was an inspiration was because he chose to never quit. At first he couldn’t win a fight to save his life, he broke his hand and everyone thought his boxing career was over. Later on his manager found him a match because everyone refused to fight this guy. Braddock was doing well but was still losing, he got his mouth guard punched out and he instantly started to think of his wife and kids. Braddock had a reason to fight unlike other americans. When Braddock was at the conference before his fight with Max Baer a reporter asked what he was fighting for, he smiled and responded “i am fighting for milk”. People kept trying to talk him out of the fight because Baer had killed two people in the ring, but since Braddock had a cause he refused to quit. When Braddock was leaving town everyone was going into the church to pray for him, when his wife entered she told the priest she was here to pray for him he said everyone was here to do the same. The priest also claims “they think he is fighting for them”. Just before the fight his wife may walks in “you can’t win without me right behind you” she says finally realising he is doing this for her and the kids. “Just remember you are everybody’s hope” she says before she
