Asian women have the highest suicide rate of any other elderly group in America and it is caused by depression, yet they don’t ask for help because of their own pride. There are three different individuals that are sharing their stories, accompanied by their families and professionals that helped them better their lives. Fung Chen Chan is originally born in Hong Kong, came to America, impacted her mental health. It caused intense grief and she felt isolated because she relocated to a different country, away from the culture she was raised in. It is important to understand your clients cultural and historical background to be able to treat and support that individual as much as possible. Immigration and the war, knowing what happened to their families back in their home country could help discover what has caused their trauma. For example, over 100,000 Japanese in the west coast were sent to “relocation centers” because they were thought to be spies and said to still affect Japanese Americans today. Many of these people have so much pride in them and do not want anyone else knowing that they are struggling or need help, which leads to them holding back and enduring any sadness and suicidal thoughts. The last patient, Lolita Naong, endured chronic illness, losing basic everyday habits, and moving away from her family and loved ones caused her to be more at risk for depression and mental illness. People would feel useless if they feel like they are not contributing to the community or the family. Positive family members and loved ones are important to individuals who are struggling with depression and other mental, even physical, issues, to recognize the problem and getting the help, they deserve.
