For this unit I read Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas which ironically I can extremely relate to. It is about a young Iranian girl and her family that moved to California when she was just 7 years of age. It memoirs her life as a foreign immigrant in the American society. In the first chapter Firoozeh states her sorrow for when she first moved to the states and how her brother had left to study in a high school in Philadelphia and how she was left to live with her uncle and his American wife. She continues to describe how America was a promise land and describes it where traffic laws are obeyed and whales jump through hoops. Where I could mostly relate is when she said, “For me, it was where I could buy more outfits for Barbie.” (page 4).
