As the world has revolutionized, humans have spawned the process of GMO plants. GMO is short for genetically modified organisms. To accomplish this, you take the embryo of a plant, and then insert a certain gene from another plant to create the desired traits. The two most common genetically modified foods are corn and soybeans. Soybeans have been recently modified to be herbicide-resistant, causing it to be less toxic to humans as well as far more cheaper to produce large amounts of crops. Crops have been increasingly modified to resist certain pests, diseases, and viruses which in return lowers the cost of production by reducing the input of machinery, chemical pesticides, and fuel. Although, these GMO crops can be extremely detrimental to the earth and the well-being of humans. Control agents that are targeted to get rid of pests target bees, which are extremely important in pollination. Large amounts of pesticides continue to be used which adds unnecessary amounts of toxicity pouring into the …show more content…
Consumers want this simply because they should and do have a right to be aware of what they are eating on a daily basis. Genetically modified crops have been known to harbor unwanted allergens which can also be deadly for some individuals, which is another reason they want labeling to be implemented. On the other hand, GMO labeling was been strongly resisted by the government and the industry. They claim that the label “organic” simply means that no GMO is in that food, causing GMO labeling to be counterintuitive. Not only that, to ensure quality the U.S Food and Drug Administration have a process in which they test GMOs to make sure that these crops are not toxic or allergenic. The industry fights that adding labels will result in higher prices and even kill the market for genetically engineered foods in the country, where 70% of processed foods already do contain
