After watching several YouTube videos about the little boy Gabriel Fernandez, my eyes were filled with tears and disappointment. I was shocked and overwhelmed by how this boy was treated by his mother and the mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Aguirre. Gabriel's death could have been prevented if our justice system had acted earlier when the abuse was reported by Gabriel’s teacher to the hotline. Gabriel Fernandez, a young boy who suffered from severe abuse and neglect, and eventually died as the result of an assault by his mother’s boyfriend, is a tragic testimony to the failure of many systems to protect helpless children. I believe that Gabriel's story highlights evident failure in the juvenile justice system, Child Protective Services (CPS), and the whole criminal justice system. I …show more content…
A more proactive intervention, including removing Gabriel from his abusive environment and providing him with appropriate support and care, could have prevented his tragic death. The CPS also faulted Gabriel for failing to effectively investigate reports of abuse and take appropriate steps to ensure his wellbeing. It is mentioned that multiple reports were submitted to CPS detailing the abuse Gabriel experienced, including physical abuse, starvation, and mental torture, but despite all the reports, he remained in the house. However, these reports were not thoroughly investigated and Gabriel was left in the care of people who posed a serious threat to his welfare. CPS's failures in Gabriel's case highlight the agency's systemic problems, including understaffing, inadequate training, and a lack of accountability. Furthermore, the criminal justice system failed Gabriel Fernandez by failing to take responsibility for his horrific actions. Despite overwhelming evidence of abuse, including testimony from Gabriel's siblings and extensive medical records, his caregivers initially avoided
