A lot of metaphorical writing helps to decipher what the author wants to say but it is not bluntly put across to the audience and almost gift wrapped. Gabriela Clove and Cinnamon is a story of a city struggling to find its identity. Ileus experiences a burst of wealth due to its cacao plantations, it is caught between embracing the radical new ideas brought by migrants and holding on to its older traditions and in this confusion there are characters that play roles to speak out what the author want to say. He is very staunch with his beliefs and ensures to keep take a pinch of salt with the developments and conversations around him. Nacib finds Gabriela, a migrant from the backlands. Backlands are usually a place for the poor and impoverished people who work for wages and are a part of the rural population of the country. But it is important to understand the background from where he finds Gabriel because they go on to fall in love despite she is from almost an outcast kind of background. Upon hiring Gabriela, Nacib does not see her for the beautiful woman she is. Her beauty is masked by the sweat and dirt of travel. This is because she travels the dusty roads to Ilhéus in search of someone to work for, like him. After Nacib takes her home to cook and clean for him and Gabriela has a chance to clean herself up, and Nacib finally realizes her beauty. He cannot resist her beauty and almost immediately and “instinctively” falls in love with her.
