Gandhi was arrested for defying the law, thus a formal negative sanction from the government (History.com 2010). Although he received a negative reaction from the government, he started a movement to fight the injustice which inspired thousands to follow him in his nonviolent march, therefore a positive reaction from the people.
Gandhi’s movement has made a lasting effect. His nonviolent tactic inspired other leaders around the world. For instance, Martin Luther King Jr. followed Gandhi’s civil disobedience method for the civil rights movement in the United States (History.com 2010). In addition, the movement led to the independence of India. This was a significant change that greatly helped the people of India.
