In Garth Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain, Stein includes a character who deceives others in the novel. Eve, wife of Denny, and mother to Zoe, intentionally deceives and hides her symptoms of her illness to spare her own feelings, her family’s feelings and spare Denny of a burden. At the end of the beginning of the novel, the reader is basically told that Eve is sick through Enzo’s description and observations of her symptoms, and his notable realization of a rotting smell and feeling in her head. Enzo obviously cannot do anything about it, as he has no way of telling Eve about the urgency of the situation. As her untreated sickness progresses, Eve also deceives Denny after he starts to notice her change in behavior and obvious change in health. Denny insists that she see a doctor, but Eve refuses, because she knows that something is wrong, and does not want to throw Denny off his racing successes. Denny was on a winning streak, and he started to leave home more often, and for longer. With her worsening health, she knew Denny would stop racing and take care of her, which she didn’t want. Even though it isn’t explicitly stated, Eve most likely also didn’t want there to be an economic burden on the family, considering she made the bulk of the money, and with her sickness, hospital bills would rack up and again, cause Denny to give up on his dream. So, she continued to deceive Denny and act as if she was okay to spare him from a burden that would drive him away from his dreams. Eve knew that Denny would give up his dream for her, but she didn’t want him to resent her, as many people fear, if they feel as if they are a burden. However, during a family trip to Denny Creek, Eve loses her balance and knocks her head on a rock, leaving her drifting in and out of
