As a child Donald was picked on quite frequently not only from school where he got his nickname “pee wee”, but also at home by his stepfather who would beat him. This violence went with Donald to school where he would fight other kids. In 1962 Gaskins for raping a 12 year old girl, but he escaped to North Carolina with a stolen car, where he met a 17 who he married, but she would later turn him into the police for rape. Donald described feelings he would get as an adult as being “aggravating and bothersome”. Gaskins later picked up a female hitchhiker and grew very angry when the woman began laughing about his sexual proposition. He then beat her. He then would go and master the skill of torture, also keeping his victims alive for days. Other days, he would eat their body parts and either have them watch him eat, or have them join in the eating. Gaskins said he preferred females, but he wouldn’t stop or not do the same things to males. In 1975 he found 80 boys in total along highways that were hitchhikers in North Carolina and murdered them. He considered killing personal acquaintances “serious murders”. He killed his 2 year old niece and her friend by luring to the woods where he raped and killed her, and raped, sodomized, and killed his niece, and would bury them together in those woods. Up until 1975 Gaskins had been killing for 6 years, and had always been working alone, which helped him easily to not get caught. But, after he murdered three people when their van had broken down, he was forced to get some help. He called Walter Neely to get the victim’s van to a garage to repaint and sell. Gaskins also turned out to be a hired hitman. One year, Suzanne Kipper paid him 1,500 dollars to killer he ex-boyfriend Silan Yates.
