It had occurred to me that this shadow of a garage must be a blind, and that sumptuous and romantic apartments were concealed overhead, when the proprietor himself appeared in the door of an office, wiping his hands on a piece of waste. He was a blond, spiritless man, anaemic, and faintly handsome. When he saw us a damp gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes." Myrtle, George's wife has an affair throughout the book with Tom
Buchanan. Myrtle having been fully aware of Tom’s marriage with Daisy, see’s Tom’s puppydog love with her as merely an opportunity to leave this poor, rather dump of a city. George is a prime example, Based on where he lives he seems to excessively miss the fact that he has a dieing business and the man having an affair with his wife is also the ONLY man that seems to be keeping him in that business instead of on the streets is Tom Buchanan.
Which brings us back George having little education because of where he lives. However in the end both Myrtle and George die providing where they live did infact impact themselves insinuating the poor can’t make it in society. The Buchanan’s on the other hand are a much different story based on where they live. “ Their house was even more elaborate than i expected, a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay.” Tom and Daisy are both born into money, because of this they’ve only lived extravagant life styles. However making them substantially dependant on their money conjugating selfishness and more than anything else carelessness.
“they were careless people Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it is that kept them together, and let other people clean up their mess they had made…” Providing the Buchanans are nothing more than self absorbed, careless, conniving people- retreating back into their money simply because thats all they know in a scene, Based on their amount of money to their name since birth. Gatsby is a pure example of a man trying to make something of himself. A family, a star crossed love, an extravagant house. “It was a colossal affair by any standard it was a facilitation of some hotel de ville in normandy with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of irony and a marble swimming pool and more than 40 acres of lawn and garden.” A house the love of his empty life would be more than happy in,
Gatsby longing to be from money- wanting to be someone- from someTHING.
However owning a marvelous house and hosting marvelous parties does not make you just anyone from just anything… we can see that although Gatsby has all these luxurious things
