One of the flashbacks in particular was Mia’s audition at Juilliard where her grandmother volunteered to take her to the audition because her parents were unable to. “Gran volunteered to accompany me. “We’ll make a girls’ weekend of it. Take high tea at the Fairmont. Go window shopping in Union Square. Ride the ferry to Alcatraz. We’ll be tourists.”(pg 49) This shows Mia’s relationship with her grandmother and how her grandmother and her had a close relationship where they could do anything together.. Her grandmother wanted to make sure that Mia didn’t miss out on something just because her parents weren’t able to bring her. They liked to share memorable experiences with each other and just share quality time together. The relationship with her mother isn’t shown either. In one flashback in the book they are eating lunch after they had just gone to a funeral and they were talking about what they wanted their funerals to be like. “In my ideal scenario, my big hearted, pushover husband and I die quickly and simultaneously when we’re ninety two years old. Mia plays at our funeral”(pg 173) This shows that Mia is very close to her mother and that they can talk about anything together even the scary thought of death and what they want to happen after they die. In the movie Mia’s grandmother isn’t even really talked about. We only see her in a few scenes and all she is doing is hugging her husband or sitting waiting in the hospital for an update on Mia and Teddy. You also don’t see much of Mia’s relationship with her mother. You don’t see how different the two are, but even though they are different it’s easy for them to talk to each other about
