3) How did you and your group explore the possibilities of form, structure and performance style?

Form
Our piece is an ensemble devised work; each member of the cast was involved in the development of the play through workshopping, writing and rehearsing. The piece benefitted from having several perspectives, particularly in scenes involving the entire ensemble. For example, in the social media scene a video of Sierra being raped is shared on Facebook. As a collective we were able to generate lots of ideas about how people would react and create a far stronger scene than any one of us, as an individual, could produce.

For example, in the final scene we use the Brechtian Epic Theatre convention of changing costume on stage, to show my character changing from John to the Policeman who deals with the case, and back to John. Using costume in this way made it very clear to the audience that my character had changed, with speed, simplicity and clarity.

Brechtian ideas were once again used in the breaking of the fourth wall, seen in scenes six and nine. Scene seven is about social media, and breaking the fourth wall here allowed us to invite the audience into the action; comedy was also a key part of the scene and making the audience feel involved increased rapport between the audience and ensemble, encouraging laughter.

The third scene, Getting Ready, is the most natural in the piece and is an enclosed scene; the scene happens as if the audience does not exist. This is also effective in terms of comedy, as it shows a window into a world which the audience knows well; there are 4 teenage boys in the piece, playing computer games and joking around like many of our audience would themselves do before a
