Hal and Charles were troublesome and greedy. On page 42 it says, ¨´The lazy brutes, I'll show them,´ he cried, preparing to lash at them with a whip.¨ This quote shows how they were going to whip the dogs when they were already exhausted. They didn't even know that they had to break the ice off from the runners of the sled. Stated on page 46 it says, ¨It was inevitable that they should go short on dog food. But they hastened it by overfeeding, bring the day near when underfeeding would commence.” This statement shows how Hal and Charles don´t know anything about dogs. Another loathsome character in the book is Spitz. He thinks he's so great and has the authority to bully other dogs who are on his team. When Buck first came, he was being picked on. Being the intelligent dog he is, Buck decided to stay away from the fights until he had to. Quoted from page 24 it says, ¨ Buck staggered over against the sled, exhausted, sobbing for breath, helpless. This was Spitz's opportunity. He sprang on Buck, and twice his teeth sank into his unresisting for and ripped and tore the flesh to the bone.¨ In this piece of evidence, it shows that Spitz´s was always trying to pick on someone (especially Buck) and never missed an opportunity to fight and kill.
