The article Theorizing Gender, Race, and Cultural Tourism in Latin America by Florence E. Babb discussed many different topics throughout the reading. I found it interesting that the article mentioned ways the native people react and respond to tourism because we had discussed this concept in the previous class lecture. The guest speaker mentioned that in China many people try to give the tourists exactly what they want in order to keep revenue generating into their hometowns. The article also briefly discussed this concept that also occurs in Peru and Mexico (Babb, 2012). One paper that we were given explains all of the workshops that we will be attending while in Peru a particular workshop in particular would be the Amazonian women workshop. I feel like this workshop in particular is a perfect example of native people trying to give tourists the “traditional” experience. I found it interesting that women work hard to learn European languages in order to become more appealing to tourists (Babb, 2012). I find this very fascinating because I do not think that people should change themselves in order to please people that are only visiting. While I do not know much, if any, spanish I would not expect the people of Peru to learn English. I find it to be very disturbing that people are willing to change their entire way of life in order to please visitors. Further in the reading I thought it was interesting that people perceive women as “more indian” than men (Babb,
