This essay hopes to address an internal validity concern for moral studies that use gendered theoretical moral situations. It delves into the idea that gender stereotyping influences the subjects interpretations of a character's moral actions.
Morality, as described by the Oxford Dictionary is the “Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behaviour”. The line that separates what is right or wrong for individuals is something that psychologist have been trying to understand. For years psychologist have been studying morality in order to gain insight in people's mind, to determine why one person's moral judgment differs from another, to discover the underlying moral beliefs, if any, that resides in us all,

We plan to test this by presenting different subjects with the same story except for half are female-coded while the others are male-coded. We then plan to observe their opinions on how the character in the story should act through multiple forced choice questions that inquiry about which action the participant thinks the character should proceed with as well as if they feel if it is “OK” for the protagonist to not proceed with their favorable action. By observing the participant's responses, we can determine if they have an overall favorable or critical view of the protagonist. Our study design was inspired by FeldmanHall et al. article Moral chivalry: Gender and harm sensitivity predict costly altruism (2016). Different from FeldmanHall’s study, we are trying to ascertain the participant’s opinions on the character’s actions rather than if they are more willing to make morally difficult decisions if it were a man or a woman.
