Parents try to raise their kids right, but sometimes kids have to go through something difficult to grow up. Gene and Finny are two characters from A Separate Peace that had to learn this lesson the hard way. Both went through their own hardships and had to figure things out on their own. In this novel, Gene and Finny showed maturity through worry, jealousy, and change. These things changed them for the rest of their lives. This book takes place during World War II, which caused a lot of panic throughout Devon. During this time, they were shipping boys off to the war. There was so much to prepare for during the war as well. The boys had treacherous work to accomplish, “Going to work on the railroad, shovel out those tracks” (Knowles 49).
