In the short story, the background looks as almost if it's in New Mexico or Arizona so the rural area would be dry, hot, and not a lot of plants. When the land was sold, it was supposedly 8 acres but during the problem with the kids running to the orchard and playing there, the people stumbled across that it was actually 16 acres in size. Plus, when they were arguing about the piece of property that is in the borders of the land that is sold must be sold, the oldest man in the village stated, “I could not sell the trees because they are not mine, they belong to the people of Rio en Medio.” Meaning that the entire community must decide on if they should sell the area since it is their own property.
Rights to owning land is a huge responsibility no matter what, but being treated differently when someone is the rightful owner of a piece of land is just an example of discrimination. In the short story, it talks about a Spanish man who will sell his land to an American businessman for twelve hundred dollars, but the American has other ideas. The American decides to buy the land for a much lower cost and apparently bought more land than expected. Since the man is Spanish and the setting is in a desert like area, the seller is most Likely inherited to be Mexican. This is an example of racial discrimination.
