George and Lennie have a stronger relationship because they have traveled together for years. Before going to work on the ranch, George and Lennie spend a night in the forest talking about their friendship, and George acknowledges to Lennie that most migrant workers “ are the loneliest guys in the world” because “they [have no] family” and “ don't belong [anywhere]” (Steinbeck 13-14). George and Lennie both recognize that their close relationship is strengthened by their unique desire to travel and work together. With having each other by their sides, George and Lennie can help each other understand that because they have each other it means they have “a future. [They have] somebody [...] that gives a damn / about [them]”
