George Washington’s farewell address was an article written by him, warning and teaching people about what must happen in America. It was written because Washington decided he did not want to run for a third term as president. Presidents across history have used this article for reference. The article has many things that the author warns about, which some we followed and some we didn’t. Washington talked about the problems of political parties, not borrowing money, and making friends with other countries. One thing that he talked about was making friends with other countries. He told us that we must be good to all countries than be best friends with one or two. Stated in paragraph four, “A passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils.” In this quote, he talks about being too close to a nation can be bad. He believes that we must be good to all because we might want a country’s resources or crops. Neutrality is what Washington wanted for a nation that needs a lot of different resources. Also, if you like one nation too much and go to war with them, you may have no other country to trade with. When he talked about these problems, he said that political parties will cause separation within the population, which would be problematic. He felt strongly about staying united and thought that we must be friendly to each other. This claim was supported by him when he said, “From different causes and from different quarters, much pains will be taken.” His main point of this sentence is that if everybody is on a different side, it will be bad for our society and lead to pain.
