Ertrudis is the second child of Mama Elena, born out of wedlock. In the novel Like Water for Chocolate she is depicted as the exact opposite of Mama Elena: young, rebellious, passionate, and free. As the second child of Mama Elena, Gertrudis was not bound to the traditional family.
