Reverend Samuel Parris is the epitome of a self-righteous person who believes he has all the right answers and uses his beliefs to back up his claims. He believes he is superior to all his congregation by his graduating from a prestigious school, therefore, according to Parris, making him entitled to their respect. While arguing with Giles Corey, Rev. Parris lets it slide that he is a former graduate of Harvard University and is not “some preaching farmer with a book under [his] hands” (Miller 146). By dropping the fact that he graduated from such a school as Harvard, Parris is trying to establish that he has the credentials and is intelligent enough to be well regarded and have the community’s respect.
