I definitely love the short story “Girl.” I also loves the fact that the daughter in the story has a strong mother that really loves and cares about her. In reading the story I was coming that the daughter is a teenage girl who feels like her mother is being tough on her. Also I feel as if the daughter feels her mother comes of more so aggressive than informative. One phrase that the mother commonly uses throughout the story when referring to her daughter is “the slut you are so bent on becoming.” For example, her mother tells her “On Sunday’s try to walk like a lady and not the slut you are so bent on becoming.” With that comment being made by your mother you would think; what parent talks to their child that way.
As the story goes on we see the mothers tone gets a little bit easier and she is not as harsh to her daughter. Mother begins to come at her daughter with a less threatening choice of words and is starting to teacher her things such as how to perform common household chores that most females seem to pick up at a young age. As an example “this is how you sweep a whole house.” “This is how you set a table for dinner.” “This is how you behave in the presence of men you don’t know very well.” I feel as if the daughter knows that these are valuable lessons that she needs to be a self-sufficient woman in this world.
