Cornelia does not like Griet at all and does things purposely to get under Griet’s skin. Cornelia continues to do things to Griet that she hopes gets Griet fired. Cornelia breaks stuff on purposely and do other things to get Griet in trouble. One day Cornelia breaks Griet’s special tile and that incident set Griet off and made her very enraged. Another conflict in Girl With a Pearl Earring is social class. Griet has goals and dreams set for herself, but she cannot go after them because of her level in the social class rank. Since the book takes place in the 17th Century, social class is everything. Therefore, since Griet is poor and is ranked as low class, she cannot be as ambitious about her goals and dreams like she wants to be. One last conflict in Girl With a Pearl Earring is Catharina Vermeer. Catharina Vermeer sees Griet as a threat after her husband hire Griet as his personal assistant. Catharina becomes envious because her husband allows Griet to see his art studio which he does not allow Catharina to see.
