In 1841 the couple moved to Uruguay where they had four children and Garibaldi got work as a teacher and as a merchant. During this time he adopted his trademark look of a red shirt, a poncho and a sombrero based on the traditional wear of the Gaucho culture of his wife. From 1842-1848 Garibaldi fought in the Uruguayan Civil War on the side of the Liberal Colorados with his “Italian Legion” also known as redshirts. He would successfully defend the capital from enemy forces over that time during which he adopted guerilla warfare tactics to win against larger opponents.
