The freedom, as I understand it, promised by proclamation, is taking us from under the yoke of bondage and placing us where we could reap the fruit of our own labor, and take care of ourselves (Foner 2). Meaning that African Americans want to be able to break slavery and be able to make a life for themselves in America without another person dictator their lives. Owning land is such important role for them because it’s their very own property to them, where they can bear the same opportunity as a white race to make their own living. Since African American are considered property and worked on properties to the south white superior, for them property of land is giving them an equal opportunity. As the Civil War is coming to an end, the relationship between the national government and African American stated Voices of Freedom page 2 to “assist the Government in main-ting our freedom” (Foner 2). African American knew that the National Government was going to keep the proclamation of African American right of freedom alive. That the African American were going to help and to fight for their freedom as well as their National Government was going to provide the rights and freedom to help impact African American
