Along with the creation of jobs, globalization has created innovative ideas and beliefs. Depression and emotional illnesses were not seen as diseases in Japan. This changed after the Kobe earthquake in 1995 occurred (Watters). Japanese psychiatrist only had patients with severe mental illness (Watters). After a television special about American’s recognition of emotional illnesses and depression, the Japanese psychiatrist offices were flooded with people claiming to suffer from these illnesses (Watters).
