In order to run a successful business, you need to acquire information about your consumers, your competitors, and your specific market industry (U.S. Small Business Administration, n.d.). When faced with the task to determine which vehicle models GM should retain and which vehicle models GM should drop as part of its bankruptcy restructuring, market research would be a good place to start. Market research is the process of evaluating data to aid you in understanding what products and services are in demand (U.S. Small Business Administration, n.d.). Market research would be imperative to assist in identifying the average number of sales per brand and model vehicle. Also, creating a survey to distribute to current GM consumers and owners as well as those consumers who do not own a GM would bring insight to reflect what brands are most popular by consumer choice. …show more content…
Advantages of surveying the consumer include, large sample size, wide range of information can be obtained, it is fairly easy to administer, and surveys are extremely economical in terms of cost (Penn State, 2011). Conducting a SWOT analysis for GM would be beneficial in determining which brands and models to retain and drop. A SWOT analysis helps a business in determining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Advantages of using a SWOT analysis include, assisting GM to understand their business, capitalize on opportunities, identify potential threats, and SWOT analyses are inexpensive (Wang, n.d.).
