The twelve labors 1275 - 1250 BC
Goddess Hera had the determination of making trouble for Hercules and therefore made him lose his mind. Being in an angry and confused state he murdered his wife and children. When his temporary insanity disappeared he was upset and shocked at what he had done. He sought guidance through Apollo and The Oracle Of God had him serve Eurypterus for a period not less than 12 years. This was to act as a punishment for his murders. Hercules was to perform 12 labors as part of his sentence. The sentences were so difficult that they seemed impossible. However, he was helped by Athena and Hermes who could show up when he was in real need of help. By the end of the 12 labors he was the greatest hero of Greece. The following were the 12 labors that were imposed on Hercules:
The first labor was to kill the Nemean Lion. The lion was considered indestructible to all weapons. Hercules killed the lion when he …show more content…
Hydra was a monster with multiple heads. The monster had a total of 9 venomous heads. Two more heads would grow to replace one head if it was cut from the body. With the help of his nephew Lolaus, Hercules managed to cut the nine heads. In order to prevent them from growing, he seared the necks with a torch.
The third punishment was capturing the Cerynitian Hind. Cerynitian was sacred to Artemis. It was a difficult task and he spent more than one year attempting to capture the deer. Artemis was determined not to allow him to take the deer and wanted to kill him for hunting it. However, he let him go upon hearing the story of his labors.
The fourth labor was capturing Erymanthian Boar. This labor made him travel as far as the lands of Centaurs. He had been given a special type of wine to attract the boar, but this wine only drew the centaurs closer to him. He attacked the centaurs, and he killed most of them. However, he brought the boar back to King Eurystheus
